Research

Connect ingredient identity, application methods, paper evidence and market definitions to procurement and ODM decisions.

Independent educational reading—not proprietary ZL research, medical advice, a supply commitment or finished-product efficacy evidence.

Ingredients

Distinguish the plant, crude extract, purified fraction and commercial specification. Constituent-family guides complement botanical profiles; neither substitutes for a product specification.

Market insights

Trade signals are not ingredient market size

Scope: comparability of cross-border merchandise trade data, using World Bank WITS explanations of UN Comtrade. This analysis does not estimate retail or ingredient market size for tea, centella or monk fruit; no trade time series was downloaded.

Why can one trade flow produce two figures?

WITS explains that imports are recorded CIF (cost, insurance and freight), while exports are FOB (free on board); the same good may also be classified differently by exporter and importer. Mirror data uses the partner’s report and is not automatically equivalent to the reporter’s own data.[4]

What this changes in a sourcing decision

Analytical implication: subtracting import and export values cannot assign the entire gap to demand growth; dividing value by mass does not yield a quote for a specific extract assay. Changing grade mix, carriers and valuation should be tested as explanations, not asserted as proven market trends.

Minimum record for reviewing a market report

  • State the question first: ingredient procurement, finished retail sales or cross-border trade?
  • Record commodity code and revision, ingredient coverage, reporter and partner, years, currency, net-mass unit, extraction date and revision status.
  • Keep the reporter and mirroring method consistent across a time series; WITS advises against switching the source between years.[4]
  • Request code lists and exclusions; check commercial relevance against supplier quotes matched by species, part, assay, method, carrier and delivery terms.
